BAPSA led cultural performance during weeks-long university strike against new hostel manual and hostel fees hike at the Freedom Square (Admin Block).
During this particular performance, flash news announced major roll-back of hostel fee hike. But the students see it as ‘eyewash’ and call for IHA meeting.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) "This 'partial roll back' is eyewash. We are demanding a complete roll back. The decrease is marginal. Plus, in the manual actual figures are not stated so they can keep increasing the fees by 10% every year. Plus they're talking about assistance to EWS. EWS category excludes the SC/ST categories and that is the reservation we are demanding. Apart from this the dress code and the curfew remains. Our demand is that since the IHA meeting was conducted in an arbitrary manner, it should be reconvened and representatives from Union need to be present. We will not move an inch till this manual is completely rolled back and IHA meeting is reconvened." (Student Circular)
JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar urged the varsity's agitating students on Friday (15 Nov.) to call off their protests, saying dialogue cannot be dictated through "coercion and illegal methods".
JNUSU said instead of initiating a dialogue, the administration has began to release "thinly veiled threats" to the teachers and students.
The vice chancellor also requested the JNU's teachers to appeal to the disgruntled students to end their agitation that is hampering "studies of thousands of students on the campus" who are preparing for their end-semester examinations.
"JNU administration would always like to engage in a dialogue and discussion, but the process and form of any such interaction cannot be dictated through coercion and illegal methods. No dialogue in this form will be fruitful," he said. (India Today)
On Sunday, 17 Nov., he again said that "During the last two weeks, the academic activities in the university have suffered greatly because some students are on strike. I have been receiving several e-mails from students and their parents expressing their concern over the loss of academic activities".
The Vice Chancellor also appealed to the students to "discontinue the strike and come back to academic work". "Inter Hostel Administration (IHA) committee, Dean of Students and senior wardens are in a process with hostel presidents to listen to their concerns about the hostels. Recently, in the Executive Council, new hostel manual was also discussed and many of the students' concerns were taken into consideration," said Kumar.
"In fact, the charges students have to pay are only 50 per cent for the below poverty line (BLP) category students. There are many other concessions given in the new hostel manual," he added. Kumar said that if students continue their strike despite these facts, it will affect the future of thousands of students. (ANI)
