Bhante Heng Piseth: First Cambodian Student Received B.H.U. Medal

[Varanasi-UP] Banaras Hindu University (BHU) organised its 100th Convocation Ceremony on 22nd November 2018. This was a special occasion since it was a celebration for the centenary year of the Convocation Ceremony. This special event was presided over by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

This year BHU organised the Convocation Ceremony for the batches 2016-17 and 2017-18. A total of 24 thousand students were awarded certificates and medals for their excellence in the academics, in their Graduation, Post-Graduation, M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Among the recipients of B.H.U. Medal was a Cambodian monk venerable Heng Piseth from Svay Daunkeo, Pursat. He came to India in 2010 as a self-financing student for B.A. course in Faculty of Arts, BHU, with major in philosophy. After successful completion of his B.A. course, venerable Piseth pursued his M.A. in Indian Philosophy & Religion in the same university in which he was a topper.

It was the pride and honour for all Cambodian students in India that he was the first Cambodian student to have received such an outstanding in his academic performance. He secured First Position at M.A. Indian Philosophy & Religion, examination 2015. For him it was a special and memorable moment in his life. He called it triple blessing day: the full moon of Magha luna month of B.E. 2559, Centenary Year Convocation of the Banaras Hindu University (1916-2016), and the receiving of M.A. degree with awarded B.H.U. MEDAL for securing First Position at M.A. in Indian Philosophy & Religion. On his Facebook timeline, venerable Piseth posted two photographs taken during the convocation ceremony with caption which is as the following:

 Receiving this medal made me the first Cambodian student in Varanasi who have obtained it and no one has ever done so. I would like to present this medal to all my dearest Cambodian venerable monk students and lay students who are studying in India.

On this auspicious day, the students were shown the journey of these 100 glorious years, so that they could also get to know about the developments and achievements of BHU that took place in these years.

We, all Cambodian students in India, wholeheartedly congratulated him on the award of B.H.U. Medal and wished him to be successful in his future endeavour.
